Why do US earthquake warnings sometimes go wrong?
Author: Huizhong Chen
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued a warning on March 4th about a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Nevada, but later withdrew the warning, stating it was a false alarm.

Earlier that day, the USGS's Shake Alert system issued a warning that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake had occurred at 4:06 PM GMT on March 4th, 6 kilometers east of Dayton, Nevada.
The earthquake alarm immediately alarmed the public, but the USGS quickly realized it was a false alarm; no earthquake had occurred. The USGS withdrew the warning and announced an investigation into the cause of the false alarm, promising to release updates to the public.
A geophysicist at the USGS stated that this may be the first time the agency has issued a completely false earthquake warning.
Progress in research on different rupture processes of Türkiye's twin earthquakes
Wang Zhi, a researcher at the Key Laboratory of Marginal Sea and Ocean Geology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his collaborators, with funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have made important progress in studying the different rupture processes of the 2023 Turkish double earthquake. Relevant results were recently published in Science China Earth Sciences.
Although geodetic and seismological observations have revealed the preliminary processes and propagation patterns of dual earthquake ruptures in Turkey, the role of deep structural changes in the East Anatolia Fault Zone during earthquake rupture remains unclear. In order to understand this in depth, the researchers analyzed a large number of high-quality P-wave and S-wave travel time data, and used seismic double-difference relocation and nonlinear multi-parameter joint inversion methods to obtain high-resolution longitudinal and transverse waves in the dual seismic rupture zone. Velocity and Poisson's ratio…
TVAA Invites GUIEP to Present Earthquakes Prediction Seminar
Tri-Valley Asian Association (TVAA) hosted the seminar on Earthquakes Prediction on May 18, 2024. Prof. Jicheng Gu, the Director and Founder of GU Institute of Earthquake Prediction (www.guiep.org), gave the wonderful speech on earthquake data of major regions in the world, basic theories of earthquake prediction, three keys to earthquake prediction, earthquake escape guide, etc.
TVAA is a bridge to connect Asians to every aspect of the society and a platform to facilitate collaboration among groups and individuals. TVAA wishes to refer more volunteers into this valuable job. Some attendees have donated funds. Soon after, TVAA sent out its appreciation letter on GUIEP's effort.
